CREATE A CALM INTERIOR

Interior design is part of everyone’s environment and recently I have been curious and picking apart the calming spaces that I create, and want to share my top six pointers. First of all I want to say that personality and a calm interior can co-exist, I don’t believe a restorative space has to be neutral or light in colour palette…

Thoughtful Furniture Arrangement:

Arrange your furniture to encourage conversation and connection. Shift the focus away from technology and towards human interaction. In the sitting room of Collingwood Residence I designed a sculptural low sofa to sit in front of the TV to ensure the focus was interactional, which created an inviting atmosphere where relationships take centre stage.

Discrete Technology Integration:

Keep technology discreetly tucked away to maintain the room's tranquillity. Consider integrating televisions within sliding doors, pop-up cabinetry, or even disguising them within mirrors or art screens. I particularly like designing wall cabinetry where sliding doors symmetrically open to reveal or conceal television, or if cabinetry isn’t possible I like to use the Samsung ‘The Frame’ TV or The Simpsons Mirror. This seamless blend of technology ensured the living space remained a haven of relaxation.

Comfort and Craftsmanship:

Invest in comfort and quality craftsmanship that resonates with you and your family. Select furniture that not only looks beautiful but also feels supportive and comfortable to achieve that cosy feeling.

Layered Textiles and Textures:

Create depth and dimension in your interior by layering textiles and textures. Experiment with a variety of fabrics in upholstery, cushions, rugs, and curtains. Whether your palette leans towards serene neutrals or vibrant hues, layering adds richness and visual interest to the space, instilling a sense of calm regardless of the room's personality.

Soft Ambient Lighting:

Illuminate your living room with soft ambient lighting to set a tranquil mood. Opt for low-level lighting sources such as table lamps on side tables sideboards, or installed as wall sconces. The gentle glow of warm light, particularly when diffused through fabric shades, creates a soothing ambiance that encourages relaxation and unwinding.

Embrace Nature Indoors:

Harness the restorative power of nature by maximising natural light and introducing potted plants. I have a particular love for the textural foliage of the maidenhair fern plant that I placed behind the sofa in the sitting room, as well as the crawling potted plant on the coffee table. These add effortless vitality to the interior, and is a sustainable option rather than using a floral arrangement in a vase. We also styled the coffee table with an oversized crystal and my client connected with the calming essence of this natural object. These small natural objects are layers that add visual interest and fosters a connection to the earth, promoting a sense of calm and well-being.
